During its early days exhibitions and openings at the
Gallery focused on emerging artists, graduating
students, and the more recognised Studio Potters Guild
and Leathermakers Guild. These exhibitions brought to
the public awareness an incredibly eclectic and diverse
group of finely crafted and designed hand made, one off
pieces for which Bamfurlong has become renowned.
Over the years more than three hundred individual
artists have been showcased and confidence in these
artists continues to grow as evidenced by the degree of
local community patronage. The vast number of pieces
taken or sent overseas and interstate, shows how
valued unique, hand made pieces are in the local and
international arena.
THROUGHOUT its long history of 24 years Bamfurlong
Fine Crafts Gallery has been either remembered for, or
sometimes forgotten because of its unusual name. The
creator, Judy Farrow named her long dreamt of Gallery
after a village near where she grew up in England. Also
the name appears in Tolkien’s "Lord of the Rings" which
is recognised by many visitors who comment and
photograph the signage and Heritage building.
There have been many challenges over the years, including
fluctuating visitor numbers, political influences, such as
GST, the influx of low-cost imported goods and the
mushrooming of Life-style stores. Yet Bamfurlong
continues its commitment to provide a unique venue in
support of South Australian and Australian Artisans.
Now, under the new ownership of renowned South
Australian Ceramic Artist Rolf Bartz, Bamfurlong continues
to offer an experience of enjoyment and appreciation of the
skill of the maker, to inspire, delight and of course, to
tempt!
